Anyone who uses a chainsaw is using a potentially lethal piece of equipment than can cause serious injury or death.

So apart from the strict training all users must use the correct PPE

Below is a list of the PPE you should expect every tree surgeon to use when carrying out work at your property.

• A safety helmet conforming to EN 397, if climbing using rope and harness the helmet must have a chin strap. All helmets have a life span of  5 years and then MUST be replaced. The helmet must incorporate ear protection complying with EN 352.
• Eye protection must be worn, either a mesh visor on the helmet to EN 1731 or glasses to EN 166.
• Gloves must be worn with protective guarding on the top of the left hand to EN 381-7.
• Leg protection must be worn incorporating clogging material to EN381-5.
• Protective boots must be worn incorporating clogging material at the front vamp and instep, they must also have good grip and comply with EN345-2
• Each person should carry a personal first aid kit to include a large wound dressing.
• A whistle should always be carried by each operative to alert others in an emergency.

Climbing equipment is classed as PPE

All tree climbing equipment and lowering equipment is covered by law, by the HSE and LOLER regulations.

This includes ropes, harnesses, karabiners and all associated equipment to do with climbing and lowering.
